It’s #factswednesday, yay!
A lot of you are LOVING our butterfly and moth costumes, and that’s exactly the reason why we thought that you should get to know more about them. Okay, let’s start! Here are facts about butterflies and moths!
First of all – what’s the difference between butterflies and moths? Maybe some of you will think that we are crazy for not knowing that, but we didn’t know.
Butterflies tend to fold their wings vertically up over their backs. A butterfly’s antennae are club-shaped with a long shaft and a bulb at the end. Butterflies are typically larger and have more colorful patterns on their wings than moths. Butterflies are primarily diurnal, flying in the daytime. One of the coolest facts is that it is not true that if you touch a butterfly’s wing and the ‘powder’ rubs off that the butterfly will not be able to fly. That powder is tiny scales and a butterfly sheds these scales throughout its lifetime.
Moths tend to hold their wings in a tent-like fashion that hides the abdomen. A moth’s antennae are feathery or saw-edged. Moths are typically smaller with drab-colored wings. Moths are generally nocturnal, flying at night. However, some moths are diurnal, such as the buck moth.
As you already saw, there are 17 500 butterfly species and 160 000 moth species, which is hard to imagine. We have made costumes and accessories out of 5 butterfly species and 11 moth species. In total there are 46 designs that you can get from us!
